9/9/2010 - Using Customer Relationship Management Systems as a Rapid Application Development Platform

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems are normally thought of as fulfilling the needs of sales or marketing departments, but the relational nature of these systems enables them to provide a capable foundation for building a line of business applications. This session will look at some of the advantages offered by Dynamics CRM that provide the rapid creation of robust applications with small development teams.

Speaker: Vivek Joshi, GLUGnet president

9/16/2010 - Reactive Framework Extensions

Asynchronous programming is becoming more important as services are pushed to the cloud and UI responsiveness becomes more business critical. These requirements, though, add on a great deal of complexity- especially when needing to synchronize several asynchronous events. Fortunately, Reactive Extensions provide a way to reign in all these events using the power of LINQ. Events can now be queried, composed, and combined making for much more expressive code in complicated situations. In this talk, I'll cover the basic concepts and terms of RX while walking through several examples where RX provides an elegant, readable, and testable solution to a complex problem.

Bio:
Joel Dart is a systems developer from Indianapolis, IN where he works at DyKnow (www.dyknow.com) on real-time, client-side software for K-12 and higher-education classrooms. Graduating from DePauw University in 2007, Joel dove in head-first into .NET working with WinForms, WPF, LINQ, and complex garbage collection issues. Joel has been an active member in Indy's c# special interest group for the past two years, and coming from a long line of teachers, most enjoys sharing his knowledge with others in the community.

10/21/2010 - Looting Design Ideas from the World of Warcraft

The World of Warcraft (WoW) is today's most popular MMORPG, with 11.5 million subscribers generating an estimated $120+ million in monthly revenue for Blizzard Entertainment. Besides being a very successful video game, WoW can also be examined as a case study for creating interesting and scalable applications. In this session, various features WoW will be examined, including end-user interface customization using APIs and add-ons, presence awareness, realtime communication between users, data caching, and offline access to application data. Each set of features will in turn be summarized by a list of concepts to take away, with the intention of inspiring creativity for designing your next application.

Bio:

Jason Follas is a Technical Architect for Perficient, serving clients primarily located in the greater Detroit region (including Toledo, where he lives and serves as the President of the Northwest Ohio .NET User Group). Since 1994, he has developed many interesting solutions on the Microsoft platform, including an Aircraft Weight and Balance system used by an air freight company, several e-Commerce websites, Risk Management systems, and blend optimization software. Jason has also been recognized by Microsoft in the past as a Microsoft MVP (SQL Server).
